Reviewer Instructions

Reviewers can view or download papers assigned to them, check their status, submit reviews on-line, view/print reviews, and access old reviews of resubmitted papers.
When a paper is assigned to a reviewer, s/he gets an e-mail from the AE containing the paper number, title, authors, and PIN number. Please note that the PIN number is unique to the paper ID and the reviewer. If a reviewer is assigned more than one paper, each paper will have a different PIN number, i.e., the PIN is not unique to the reviewer. Reviewers who are also authors will have a separate author PIN. However, once a reviewer is logged on he/she can access author function as well, if registered as an author. Copies of papers are NOT e-mailed. The reviewer can view or download the paper from eLANE directly.
eLANE is set up to handle up to two review cycles. A paper that gets the rating of "Major Revisions" can be resubmitted after revisions. This is called Cycle 2.

Logon as Reviewer to Download Paper/View Paper Details
To logon as a reviewer, go to the Reviewer Menu and click on Download Paper. Logon by entering your First Name, Last Name, Full Paper ID, and PIN number. All these are contained in the e-mail sent to the reviewer from the Associate Editor. If all of these match up you will be able to see the paper information. Click on View/Download Paper button – Cycle 1 for first-time submitted papers, and Cycle 2 for revised paper. You can view the paper on-line or save it to your computer by selecting, “File/Save As” on your browser. Similarly, you can print a hard copy by selecting “File/Print” on your browser.

Submitting a Review
Logon as a reviewer by selecting Submit Review. You will be presented with an on-line version of ASME Review Form 1257. Fill in all the review fields and your desired recommendation.
If you have extensive comments it may be best to type out your comments in a text processor in advance. Then you can just cut and paste your comments into the review form. Please be aware that your connection will time out if there is no action for one hour. It is best to SAVE and continue, rather than waiting until the end.
If you cannot complete your review in one session, you can save your work and quit without submitting. (use SAVE instead of SUBMIT).

How to insert symbols, equations and figures in the review-Reviewers can attach a supplementary document (Word or PDF) containing equations, figures, etc. Click on the Attachment button when doing the review. Only textual remarks can be included on the ASME 1257 Review Form. Marked up copies of papers are best handled by scanning the necessary pages with the annotations and converting to Word or PDF.
When you have completed the review form and are ready to send it to the Editor, select the Submit button. The review will be put in the eLANE database and an e-mail will be generated to the AE. You can edit this e-mail to include any special comments you have about this paper.
Remember:
SAVE - saves current review but does not transmit it to the editors; you stay logged on, so you can continue to
make changes or LOGOFF and return later.
SUBMIT - saves your current review and transmits it to the editors by generating an e-mail. You cannot change
the review after the AE makes a decision.
Important:Because internet connections can be disrupted, it is recommended that reviewers press the "Save & Continue" button often to avoid losing any of their work.
IMPORTANT
Once a review has been submitted, it cannot be withdrawn or altered by anyone, including the reviewer. This ensures the integrity of the review process. Reviewers can view the completed review form at any time and print it for their records. Go to "View Review Form" in the Reviewer main menu. The reviewer sees only his own name on his own review form. The authors and other reviewers cannot see who has reviewed a paper.
Authors can only views reviews after the Associate Editor has released them. Names of reviewers are suppressed for viewing by authors.

Handling Resubmitted (Cycle 2) Papers
A resubmitted (Cycle 2) paper is one that has been previously reviewed, but found to require major revisions. It is assigned the same Paper ID number as the original paper so that its old reviews can be accessed. It is, therefore, important that you check the "Cycle 2" box to indicate the you are the reviewer for the resubmitted paper. If this is NOT done, eLANE will assume that you are referring to the original paper (Cycle 1 is marked by default) and either will not log you in because you were not on the first list of Reviewers, or will not allow you to put in a new review because you were not on the first list of reviewers, or will not allow you to put in a new review because your review for the original paper is already on record.
You can view all previous reviews of resubmitted papers, including those by other reviewers. These letters will be displayed anonymously (reviewer name suppressed). Supplementary documents attached to the review can be viewed via "Paper Details" accessed from the "Download Paper" menu.

Registered Reviewers Who Wish to Submit a Paper
If you are a registered reviewer for JCISE (reviewed a paper in the past) but you have never submitted a paper to JCISE yourself, logon as a reviewer. You can use any paper # for which you are a reviewer (if you do not remember the paper # and corresponding PIN for that paper, please contact the Tech Editor. After you login as a reviewer, click on Submit Paper in the Author menu. eLANE will ask you to create an author PIN for yourself and then take you through the paper submission steps. Note that your author PIN is different from PIN's assigned to you for doing reviews.
